The Hardest Part of Starting Something New is Getting Started

We all have a little voice inside of us that seems to appear to be fantasy. Kind of like a dream. We tell ourselves that one day maybe I will get started on that dream. Now, this could be as simple as starting a blog because your dream is to be the best blogger in your respective genre. Or it could be as big as becoming the next best athlete in the sport you love.

Now, there is always that “devil’s advocate” side of you that appears to be “reality”. My friends, I have learned that there is a name to this over this past year. Thx @katierobleski. I learned that this voice inside of you that we often confuse with “reality” is called resistance. Resistance hates when we start something that we have been wanting to start for a long time. It hates when we begin to chase our dreams or set new goals for ourselves.

Resistance loves comfort. It thinks you are beautiful the way you are, and that you should not strive to reach the next level of growth that you do have the potential to reach. Like I said in my last Instagram post, I will spare you most of the details from what I have learned about resistance. So, here are a few things I have learned about beginning to pursue a new initiative that may have been getting put off for some time…

It’s all about getting started

I have worked in the marketing/advertising game for a little over a year now. One of the largest lessons I have learned working around a very talented team is, no matter what “it” is, “it” is better done than perfect.

In my case, it is better to just get a piece of content out there, opposed to having 5-10 people proof it before it goes live. If you feel like it is in a good spot and are happy with it, do not worry about the critics. Your content should feel like you. Just keep things moving. Resistance loves stalled projects. Do you know what else it hates? When you invest in your dreams and goals.

Invest in your dreams and goals

Investing is a tough word because we often think of it in financial terms. Yes, if you have a dream and goals, you should invest money in it to help enhance your audience’s experience with you.

But, I like to talk about investing from a time sense as well. You have to put in the time for your dreams and goals to turn into reality and success. And realize that nothing with probably happen for quite some time. Now that is humbling.

I was watching a YouTuber the other day talk about time in terms of a financial sense last week. He said, “If someone gave you $86,400 every day and told you that you had to spend it all because will not roll over into the next day, would you be able to spend it all?”

“Ummm… yeah… duh”, is the first thing that comes to most people’s minds.

Then he followed with this line, “Well if you answered yes, then you should also realize that every day is filled with 86,400 seconds. Think of these seconds as the monetary value in the previous line. If someone told you that no matter how you spend it, it will go away forever, would you be able to spend it correctly?”

Resistance hates when we spend our time correctly, it would rather have us spend our time thinking about what other people think of us.

Stop caring about what other people think

There’s always going to be people judging what you are doing. It’s inevitable. If you are not doing things the way they do, you are going to be judged. And it is a shame, for them.

It is a shame for them because they have likely been beaten by resistance. They are unhappy in their way because they never have beaten resistance for even 1 round. Resistance is probably 50-0 against them, lookout Floyd Mayweather.

Me saying “stop caring about what other people think”, is easier said than done, but a change in mindset for how you view “haters” can lead to a nice W against resistance. I choose to feel bad for people who judge me instead of feeling anxiety from them.

Welp, thank you for reading my first blog here. If you choose to take this and apply it to your own life then I am very thankful, but if you do not, thank you for stopping by and hearing me out. There will be more to come. Stay groovy.
