Change is inevitable. We hear it all the time. People talk about how our lives never stay the same and they would be no fun if they did. Sure, part of that is easy to agree with.
We lose a job all of a sudden, we relocate to a different city, a relationship we once cherished goes south, etc.
There are a lot of aspects of our lives that can change in the blink of an eye.
Recently, I decided to move out of my hometown.
I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous to jump into the unknown.
As a result of the move, I would be leaving behind daily relationships I cherish, a routine that I put in place and had been executing “religiously” for the previous years, and places that held high value to me for as long as I can remember.
All that nervousness was set aside when my trainer Deane (in the cover image, all the way on the right) dropped a bombshell line on me.
That line…
“No matter where you go, there you are.”
Boom.
After discerning this line for quite some time, here is what I learned about its true meaning (at least from how I see it).
We are a makeup of our previous experiences
We may change locations.
People may come and go in our lives.
But what matters is that we take those experiences, and their lessons, with us in order to continually grow.
This means if we made professional mistakes in our careers, mistakes within our personal/romantic relationships, wins in our careers or wins in our relationships (it doesn't always have to be about negative experiences), we take these lessons with us no matter where we go.
At the end of the day, we aren’t trees. We can move around and we have a brain.
We cannot forget about what we’ve learned from positive or negative outcomes when we move on from something, or else we’ll have to live all those experiences over again.
And hey, that’s no fun. If our routine is positive and helping us grow (along with the people around us), why fix what isn’t broken?
A change of location doesn’t have to mean a change of systems
When we move to new locations we have to find new stores to buy food, new gyms to workout at, new coffee shops to write at (if you’re like me), etc.
And the first few weeks (or even months) it might be hard to adjust. But if we have defined a successful routine for ourselves and our new confines allow us to resume that routine, why change it?
Sure, certain tidbits might change like what time we may wake up, distances to and from certain locations (i.e. our drive to the office), etc. But, where we currently are right now is a direct result of the systems that we’ve put in place for ourselves.
Everyone has a routine. Whether we like it or not, there are certain actions we take on a daily basis that have led us to where we currently are in life. Those actions may have even led you directly to this blog ;)
We must decide if that routine works for us once we start our new endeavor. And if it is, there may have to be some minor adjustments, but keep on keepin’ on.
If the routine is not working, well no worries, that just means you’re human. Congratulations. New opportunities to learn new lessons are on the way.
We are still human beings, so new lessons are adieu
No matter where we go, we are still human beings.
We can put the most bullet-proof routine in place and one or two bullets will slip through the barrier from time to time.
What we must remember is that with new endeavors, new lessons are inevitable. And the way we look at them means everything.
Sure, we can look at them and shake in our boots with nervousness, that is totally acceptable. Or… we can look at them as a new opportunity to learn and grow no matter the end result.
So yeah, no matter where we go, here we truly are.
All of our wins. All of our lessons learned.
All of our systems we’ve built. All the new opportunities to make them better.
All the people that have come into our lives. And all the people who haven’t yet.
How exciting 🙂
Thank you for reading.
Until next time,
Vinny
